I’m super pleased to announce that my latest photo book, Polafornia, is featured in Impossible Project’s Impossible Magazine. I couldn’t be happier! Read the article and look at the pics here.
My new photobook, made in collaboration with Ingvild Eiring, is finally available!
Longtime collaborators and friends, model and artist Ingvild Eiring, and photographer and author Julie Loen embark on a week-long trip to California, traveling in a loop from San Francisco, via Sacramento to Yosemite, and back to San Francisco again. Join them on their adventure through a selection of Polaroid pictures, digital photographs, candid snapshots, drawings, and words.
Ingvild and Julie visit Alcatraz without doing the audio tour, encounter a family of skunks by Folsom Lake, deal with an allergy attack after cuddling a rabbit in Sacramento, fall in love with an abandoned trailer home in El Portal, ride horses in Yosemite, raft down the Merced River, discover the original “bollefjoms” at the Palace of Fine Arts, and walk across the Golden Gate Bridge in the fog.

The 180 page book is available in three different editions:
The E-book version of All the Things a Woman Oughtn’t Do – The Ballad of Zerelda Glanton is currently free. Yup, that’s right, no charge. Go pick up your free copy HERE, before I change my mind.
I did a shoot recently, with model Ingvild Eiring, that was inspired by Siri Pettersen’s wonderful fantasy series The Raven Rings. To my great delight Siri loved the pictures and posted a whole album with images from the shoot on Facebook. To see more of the images head on over to my photo website julieloen.com
We did the shoot in the woods behind my house. I’ve done many shoots there before and never felt creeped out, but this day was different. Before we got started we came across a dead hare on the trail, and when we were ready to shoot a tree fell over close by us – the sound it made was… Well, it sounded like a troll was smashing through the forest. The rest of the day we didn’t hear a single bird, they were all inexplicably gone. But the forest wasn’t quiet, dead trees swayed in the wind, their shrivelled bodies creaking and screaming like something out of a horror movie.
My good friend and often partner in crime Ingvild Eiring does more than model, make-up and costume, she is a terrific sculptor as well. Her speciality is mice in victorian clothing. I asked her to make me a Crazy Cat inspired mouse… and then this happened. Mad Mouse came to life. I couldn’t be happier with the result, every little detail is perfect, from Lee’s (Crazy Cat) whisker scars to a pair of tiny spurs. Everything is handmade, even the clothes are sewn by Ingvild.
Ingvild takes commissions, if you want a custom mouse too, just send an email to: email@example.com
I have a brand new photo website. Go have a gander over at julieloen.com
My good friend and favorite model has made a photo book with a selection of the art and erotica images she has created during the last five years with fifty photographers from around the world. I am extremely proud to have several of my photographs featured in the book.
Buy the book here and make sure to be quick about – there are only 200 copies! You’ll also find luxury editions which include prints signed by both Ingvild and yours truly.
This is a project I’m super excited to tell y’all about: It’s a photo collaboration with model and costume designer Ingvild Eiring. We have already completed two sessions on different locations and plan to do at least three or four more. We might be done by the end of the year. The project will definitely culminate in a book and hopefully an exhibition.
The theme is vaguely based on the Old West, with a somewhat fleeting cowgirl character in the “lead role.” We’re more concerned about creating something captivating, than to stay true to historical accuracy or a tangible storyline. Sources of inspiration range from Helmut Newton to Matthew Brady. The series will be shot entirely on Polaroid.
